Dedicated webcam watchers may have noticed that the picture sometimes appears to get 'stuck', often for several days at a time. That happens when the camera fails to update the image on the server, usually due to a fault with the island's internet connection, the electricity system or the camera itself.
But on occasion, particularly during the winter months, the camera is deliberately shut down and the internet router unplugged to protect the equipment from damage during the frequent storms. Lightning strikes to the island's electricity cables are notorious for causing damage to computers and routers so it's common practice to unplug things when a storm is forecast.
The Symi Visitor office is only open a couple of half-days a week during the winter months so if there is a chance of a storm Adriana will unplug the vulnerable equipment before leaving.
So if the webcam appears 'stuck' it's probably just because it's been temporarily turned off and will be back soon.
