Webcam down time

Dedicated webcam watchers may have noticed that the picture sometimes appears to get 'stuck', often for several days at a time. That happens when the camera fails to update the image on the server, usually due to a fault with the island's internet connection, the electricity system or the camera itself.

But on occasion, particularly during the winter months, the camera is deliberately shut down and the internet router unplugged to protect the equipment from damage during the frequent storms. Lightning strikes to the island's electricity cables are notorious for causing damage to computers and routers so it's common practice to unplug things when a storm is forecast.

The Symi Visitor office is only open a couple of half-days a week during the winter months so if there is a chance of a storm Adriana will unplug the vulnerable equipment before leaving.

So if the webcam appears 'stuck' it's probably just because it's been temporarily turned off and will be back soon. :)

Thanks for the info about the webcam "downtime". I really miss my daily "fix" of live views from Symi ( sad I know !) but roll on July when I can see it for real again - at least for a week !

There's nothing 'sad' about getting your Symi fix from the webcam, we all do it! :D

The camera is off at present for the nasty storm that was due to hit today. The forecast seems to be improving from tomorrow but Adriana may decide to leave it switched off until Monday, just in case.

The weather must have improved as the webcam is back on :D It's my morning routine to visit Symi Dream and Symi Visitor websites over breakfast and gaze at the webcam view before getting back to reality ;)

We all enjoy a look at the Web Cam especially when the weather here is cold and wet and Symi has warm sunshine I check it most days even when I'm on holiday elsewhere.

I've found myself checking the webcam for the 'up-harbour' view from our apartment above the boatyard. How's that for sad?

Yep sitting on the other side of the world having a coffee break and watching the Symi harbor , can't get closer than the real thing . =)

Just a little update: Symi has been suffering from random power cuts over the last few days which is why the webcam has appeared 'stuck' for extended periods.

It is running again now (10th. November) but thunderstorms are forecast in the coming days and the webcam may be switched off for a while if there is a chance of lightning.

"Symi Webcam 02:50:43 2017/12/06": Has someone forgotten to switch it on again?
(Or is my computer the problem?)

I have the same date 2017/12/06 and time 02.50.43 as you no matter how many times I refresh the page.

I guess Adriana isn't yet back from her UK break to switch the camera back on. Given Symi's (ir)regular power cuts, electrical equipment is often swtiched off if there isn't going to be someone around to take action when eg storms are forecast.
