Hi,

BBC World Service TV seems to have disapeared over last couple of days - does anyone know why and if its going to return ?

Meanwhile - the sun is shining !

This happens every so often, usually with a message along the lines of 'Please insert new smart card' so I think it is probably roll over date for the town hall's BBC World subscription!

Is there any way of receiving BBC world service radio on the island. I miss it late at night.

Apparently BBC World Service Radio can be picked up on short wave with a bit of twiddling but I have never succeeded in more than 'snap, crackle and pop'.

Hugo and Jean are reputed to be the experts on finding it!

If you can receive short wave and get a long piece of wire ( ideally cut to frequency as an end-fed, but not essential) and experiment with the direction - it will need to run up into the air, you should get a signal but it is notorious for the fading in and out ....... and rumour has it that the Beeb isn't too bothered about the service long term ! (No licence payers for the Beeb and no votes for any current government !

As well as the dodgy shortwave transmissions, BBC World Service is also available from the Hotbird satellites (Hotbird 2 if I remember correctly). Not a lot of use for visitors I admit, unless you fancy packing a satellite dish along with the suncream but it is in principle possible to receive the signal and re-broadcast it on the island in the same way they do for BBC World TV.

Perhaps Jean could start a campaign?

It's a long time ago but do I remember that the length of the perfect aerial should be cfrequency or have I got it all wrong?

Yep, c/f will give you the wavelength Richard but that would be a long bit of wire - owt up to 60m in length! A half-wavelength aerial is more usual but that's still a bit long to be hanging out of a Nireus window!

Not only that but the World Service keep changing the frequencies they use depending on the time of day.

Fair crack of the old whip, Sorella! Listening to the BBC-at night-on Symi. Don't give me that malarkie, olde gel.
From what my spies have told me you are, err, tired and emotional (in a nice way) most nights. :geek:
Other nights you host your infamous soirees..gin and vermouth in a plastic baby bath and bring your own ladle.. :(
Not much time for the Beeb, methinks!! :)

Turned on the television this morning in search of the news headlines and bingo! the Beeb had changed into a very snowy Turkish channel covering the Pope's visit to Turkey.

My wee events are much more sophisticated than that OG. Just ask the McSporrans. More Champagne socialist than gin in a bath. Tony Banks rip has been knoon to grace our company. There are no nice ways to be tired and emotional. If you mean I often get drunk then say it..... Your spies??? Tell me who they are or shut yer face.

You can certainly be "tired and emotional" in a nice way. You can get the "nasty" ones who all they want to do is argue, or worse still, get violent.
Then there are the "happy" ones that laugh and sing...or just nod off.
There are no spies, Sorella, just a figure of speech.
I hope your last comment was made with a wry grin. :geek:

I'm afraid and wee Jimmy will vouch for this, that I fall into the nasty tired and emotional brigade. He has the wounds to prove it . Why he puts up with me I'll never know.

We can recive world service radio quite well in the mornings ( breakfast time ) and in the evenings. It does depend a lot on atmospherics. The reception is never brilliant but with concentration, its listanable. But you do have to change frequencies which rather gives an aerial length problem.

We have tried digital radio ( Hotbird ) but where we are in Chorio it didnt see the satelite. We took it down to Marathunda and it did work there - long way to go to listen to a radio prog!

Listening over the net is the best way, although expensive ( depends how keen you are on following the Archers ! )

In Israel and Cyprus one can pick up the Beeb on Medium Wave...

Or rather, one could - I don't know what the situation is like now.

Half Larnaca marina was also tuned into the television service for the British Base. Cilla Black and Blind Date... Eeek!
