The current update (8.30 on 21 Dec 06) on the situation is :

The mail boat contract still has not been announced and until such time as it is ANES cannot finalise their January timetable. :evil:

I emailed ANES again today asking for information -
Maybe they will suprise me and reply. I doubt it.

It's amazing anybody ever gets to Symi, out of date timetables with wrong information.
A discrace for the island.

Amazingly, despite their pessimism this morning, the ANES site now gives a schedule for the first few days of January.

And it would seem to indicate that, at least for the time being, ANES will be continuing to provide the mail boat route with the Proteus!
