The Great Ferry Saga Continues

Postby Adriana » 23 Jan 2007, 17:06

Just had a chat with Costas Sikalos over at Symi Tours and, to cut a long story short, it would seem that while ANES and SAOS (the shipping company of Samos) are mired in bureaucratic hassles over who gets the inter-island car ferry contract, Dodecanesos Seaways is coming out of mothballs in February and should soon be back in service. :D

I don't think that SAOS is the shipping company of Samos, but of Samothraki?

They'd be a long way from home if that was the SAOS in question, Bill! :?:

There are two ANEKs as well- one was from Kalymnos and ran the Nissos Kalymnos which used to call in here - and the other is Cretan.

I do so HATE to disagree with the SV office or mention that Adriana has made a mistake...but the SV office is wrong and Adriana has made a mistake. The SAOS ferries in question is the Samothraki SAOS, not the SAMOS one (which is not called "SAOS Ferries" if it even exists). This was all reported in "another place" in November.

"The boat SAOS II, currently serving the Samothraki-Alexandroupoli route in the north of Greece, is only 6 years old (was launched in 2000), is 84 metres long and can cruise at 20.5 knots per hour or 19 knots per hour..."

Very smug as usual, Will. You omitted to mention that the "other place" also reported a news "exclusive" about the ferry contract - a tad premature perhaps? No-one is infallible and gloating is such bad form.....

Yes the "other" place did report the exclusive regarding the ferry contract, news which was available in several sources in the Greek press at the time, for those who are actually able to read the Greek Press that is, so not in the least bit premature. The fact that SAOS appeared to cock up their application all happened after the fact.

Gloating, bad form? Yes, but being a drunk who throws drinks on people in public is so much worse! I don't think anyon eis really going to take lessons in how to behave from someone who does that sort of thing.

I do so HATE to disagree with the the other place or mention that Hermes has made a mistake...but it's not "knots per hour". That is the same as saying "miles per hour per hour" it's just "knots".

yeah, they're pig ignorant over there, Zeus. What a mistake to make...probably means that all the news they've been reporting on the ferries over the past two months which hasn't been seen on any other English language site is all wrong too. Is the non-verbal language thing as much a problem for you as it was for Mille?

Good idea, given past form you've got all that hard work of editing/deleting/locking this thread coming up, so had better take a rest first.

Does this mean it is not Samos?

There was no need for such an aggressive response. I was only pointing out a glaring inaccuracy which could be mis-leading.

Usual story when an error is pointed out and such a correction isn't taken kindly, Bill. Some can be overly sensitive to such things.

yes, it's not Samos but Samothraki. Not a particularly important distinction for someone who is a Symi-lover, but worth correcting. I would wait for those who made the error to correct it, but feel that a response to you to that effect from them may not be particularly likely.
