I see I have opened Pandora's box with my comment that SAOS is from Samos. Sorry I didn't pick up on this early - it's newspaper week so I haven't been on the board for a while - too busy writing about food :D .

Unlikely though it may seem, for those of you who may be interested, the hot contender for the route currently plied by the Proteus is indeed from Samothrace and I apologise for any confusion my remark may have precipitated. :|

Samothraki...that brings back memories. :) I met a Oz-Greek artist
in Athens, Eva, and she was going to the island to paint and asked me to "call in"
I should have flown but instead caught the train to Thessoloniki and thence a long ferry ride to Samothraki. Its a very beautiful island and can understand why its a haven for artists.
The trip was worth it  but I flew back. In those days internal airfares were cheap as chips. I have a photo of the plane I first caught Athens-Rhodes. The size of a moth and looked vintage circa 1930. :o

ps Anyone know how Thessoloniki got its name???? :?:

Mate Geoff ,i would love to sit down with you with a few Mythos and hear some of your travel tales because sounds like you have seen the lot, with respect even my grandfather whom traveled to Greece and other countries many times and even when he was in Egypt during the war some of the stories he would tell. :geek: Iwish we too can see even half of what you have seen ;)

Alexander the Great named it after the Macedonian army conquered Thessaly. It means 'Victory in Thessaly'.

Yes, Kon, I've been very lucky. I always remember the saying "The fool wanders. The wise man travels"

Over Xmas I read an article about the Whirling Dervishs performing at Konya, Turkey. I exclaimed to myself...I've seen them there!!!
It was not planned, it was just they were doing one of their rare performances when I happened to be there. :D

Kon, my cousins son is living in Melbourne, has a high fullutin job with Bunnings/Westfarmers. I may just pop over, when the kids go back to school there should be some el cheapo air fares!! :)
