Hope you like the Out and About pictures, Allan. As all roads on this chat page lead ultimately to food we included Stavros performing wonders at short notice in the kitchen. :D

There will, of course, be more in the May edition of the Symi Visitor which we are putting to bed this weekend, with an official report back from the town hall. :)

Poor Stavros - didn't anyone think they'd need feeding? I hope the visit brings some benefit to Symi but I can't help taking the British jaundiced view of the EC (I absolutely refuse to use the word "union") - More Ministers on a junket, this time round the Greek Islands, at the taxpayers expense....AGAIN!

Apparently at the last minute the venue was changed from the Nireus to the Aktaion for security reasons.

Just as well they didn't come today instead - it's blowing really hard in the harbour this morning. I've just been on a quick foray to the shops, dodging low flying postcard stands and collapsing T-shirt displays.

Great pictures Adriana. I notice most of the Ministers were reading Symi Visitor while waiting for Stavros to do his stuff. :)

Just as well it wasn't windy yesterday - that 'awning' looks none too secure!

What do you mean, Poor Stavros? He is quite capable of feeding the odd 40 people without any warning and probably enjoyed it. At least he was using the big kitchen. Turning out food for that many people at the same time from downstairs might not have been quite so enjoyable!
(Since the band and the dancers turned out, I suppose it is just possible that Mr Mayor mentioned it to him in passing.)
Nice pictures.

Just as well the Akteion was able to open - can you imagine them all sat on the quayside - holding down their food in the wind? :D

I was on Patmos in 2004 when a BIG boatload of EC Ministers descended, complete with fleet of coaches and lots of security. They went up to the monastory. Isn't it odd that with the all the salubrious spots in the EC (Preston comes to mind)that they descend on places like Patmos and Symi. Must be the huge population of the Dodecanese that necessitates their attention. Glad I don't help to pay! :)

Stavros should have served them gravy - to go with the train they seem perpetually riding! :)

I don't think Adriana mentioned whether they came of a normal ferry or a chartered gin-palace. Can I have a guess?
Security? Who in the hell were they anyway? I doubt if there was a head of state present, maybe the head of stationary procurement and his officers: the purchasing officers of biros, pencils, rubber bands, erasers, note pads etc and then their lackies. :(
They should read "Lets have a bit of fun" on the off topic page. :geek:

I get the impression that some of the users of this forum are starting to get a little cynical about politicians. Remember what the word means.

According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, two meanings of the word politic are "scheming" and "crafty" - that's a fair description I'd say...

What is the Greek for "For Sale"? There are over 4200 Greek words in the OED. That is one of the better known ones.

From today's Foreign Office Press Release:

Strengthening and deepening the UKs strategic partnerships with Greece and Cyprus and other international and regional issues will be at the heart of discussions when Minister for Europe Geoff Hoon visits Athens and Nicosia on 24 and 25 April.

Another trip to Symi tomorrow?

The Government would do better by strengthening the troops fighting Mr Bliar's wars instead of gallivanting around the Med. - Stop it Richard! You're giving me high blood pressure :?

You analysed the wrong word Kojak :P Cynic is: a person (read you and I) who believes that people (read politician) are motivated purely (not to be confused with purity)by self-interest rether than acting for honourable or unselfish reasons. Suitably cynics were members of a school of ancient Greek philosophers.
