Drum kit on Symi?

Postby magnusp » 10 Nov 2008, 13:14

I have recently moved to Symi with my partner. We will be here until at least the end of April. I am a keen musician the drums being my chosen instrument, I have been playing since my early teens. I'd like to be able to keep practicing whilst I am here. Does anyone know of a drum kit that I might be able to use whilst I am here.

Indeed is anyone up for jam sessions or even have a band that needs a drummer?

I know this is a long shot but it's always worth asking, isn't it

First of all welcome to the website magnusp :) , I hope we hear lots more from you.

I'm sure others will be able to provide you with a much better answer than me but one suggestion may be to wonder up to Lefteris Kafenion in Chorio (next to the Rainbow Bar) and have a word with a rather err...... engaging guitar player by the name of Nontas  (he'll be the good looking guy with the stunning smile ;) )....he may be able to point you in the right direction.

Why:-

?

Us drummers are not all Neanderthals whose knuckles drag along the ground. I'm only a bit of an animal.

Seriously though, thanks for the tip Maziemoo I'll seek out Nontas.

If anyone has any more info about drums on the island I'd be eternally grateful.

You can blame Jim Henson for my drumming, I've just realised the Muppet band had a deep influence on me in my childhood. My Gran loved Ralph the dog pianist but my fav was always Animal.

Magnus, if you continue up into Chorio past Lefteris' Kafenion one of the shops on the right hand side is sometimes used by a bunch of local musicians as a 'rehearsal room'.

I haven't seen a drum kit in there, just musical instruments (sorry - couldn't resist ;) ) but it may be worth calling in to introduce yourself.

It's the continuing "past" Lefteris that is the difficult bit. Nice photo. Reminds me of someone.

Magnus

There's a little more news for you: I asked James from who is fairly sure there is a drum kit on the island.

He suggests you track down Theo who during the season works at Panormitis' sponge shop. Theo is keen to get Symi musicians together "for some cross-culture playing" and will certainly know what instruments there are.

Gawd, I remember Theo when he was just a young lad working at Roula's, doubt he was much more that 15 or 16.
Now I DO feel old....

Ozzie, what is worse - we remember him as well as a toddler and now he is married with babes of his own....Teo was so funny this time we were in Symi by walking up to me and saying hiya shorty when you going to grow up! He is so tall now!! MagnusP - Teo is a brilliant musician we have heard him and watched him play many times...I will never forget when we were at Kiriaki's pre wedding party and the music he played..sigh, I shall have to go and get my video out now again and listen.

And Nundas is playing traditional drums as well. It is easy to recognize him, he is too driving aroud on a bike with his dog, Macho, a lovely white/brown one. If you are lucky the band is playing in Lefteris cafenion in the evenings, mostly weekends, especially here in wintertime where there is no tourists around. They are playing Rebetika, taditioal greek music.
