Hi everyone and welcome to 2011 - hope it is a good year for all. Son fully recovered and HAS STOPPED SMOKING _ YEEHA! That is a big bonus fo me and probably life-saving for him.
Not off to Athens now. Found a company called Greek Options and have booked a 2 bed studio in Kefalonia in the tiny village of Assos. Veranda is almost IN the sea and only a small minimart, gift shop and about 3 tavernas one specialising in seafood. We shall miss Symi but look forward to exploring another Greek island. I still want to see Kastellarizo and as Aberdeen is lengthening its runway so it can do international flights it may be on the cards for 2012. Always good to have it to look forward to. Cheers everyone and will see you in Symi yet 8-)
p.s. flights from Scotland getting worse - like hens teeth!!!!

:) That's what i thought Buzzy and when i phoned the U.K. number to get more info the staff did indeed know the resorts and were able to give me info such as buses etc. There is not a bus to and from Assos - ah bliss - but we will be able to get a taxi to a nearby town and get the bus from there. :)

my oh my Snoopy I've taken a peek, it looks gorgeous and the accommodation looks excellent and seems very reasonable. As for the Shirley Valentine, never say never, you just never know what's awaiting you in life :)

Hi Snoopy, Assos has a really strange phonenomum(spelling probably wrong) in that the sea appears to be on 2 different levels on either side of the outcrop that juts into the sea. It's a really lovely place and from what I remember a very hairy switchback of a road going down to Assos. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Thanks for that Colette. We shall be car-less - does that mean that all the exercise on the Kala Strata will come in useful or should we get down to Assos and stay there!!!!!? Someone else told me about the sea suddenly shelving not only in Assos but on other beaches round Kefalonia. No messing when going in for a swim then - in and be done!! 8-)

We are on Kefalonia during late June and July this year.
I agree with Joanie, you will miss so much without a car, the bus service in Kefalonia is almost non existent.
The Lovely Paliki Peninsular is so close to Assos.
Beautiful places to visit on the Paliki include Atheras, Platia Ammos, Kippouria Monastery,Petani beach (like Mirtos). Closer still is Agia Efimia, then down to Sami and Antisamos beach.
Won't go on about the rest of the Island but you have picked a lovely place to stay. Some picks of Assos, Petani and Anti Samos. Enjoy your Holiday.

Unfortunately we have to wait until September before we are back on Symi again. So looking forward to it.

There are several Tavernas in Assos. Platanos, Nefeli, Molos are on the Waterfront.
Assos Taverna in a side street and the North Restaurant is up a flight of steps and has amazing views. There is Sea-side caf as well which hires boats.
Two Mini marts, one in the village and another up the hill a bit which is much cheaper.
Will shut up now as this is forum is about Symi after all.

Thank you John for the lovely pictures,
They bring wonderful memories back to
me. My late husband and I had a great
holiday there, brought a tear to my eye
Goodness the times I drove over that
bridge at Argostoli. The water was practically
level with the bridge, when an oncoming
car was coming I thought we'de be in
the water lol. But as the days go by
you get used to it dont you.LOL :D :D

That was lovely and sad at the same time Joanie.
Must bring back some good memories.
The Drapano bridge has been closed to traffic except for locals on Motorbikes for a few years now. Lovely to walk to the memorial half way across and watch the Loggerhead Turtles.
We get torn each summer on where to go, Symi is always a must, but then we love Lesvos and Kefalonia too. Have to take cheap package deals these days as my budget does not stretch to independent travel anymore. The tour operators seem to go to fewer and fewer small or less visited Islands since many have collapsed or been taken over by the TUI group.
We noticed that even Olympic holidays is partly owned by them now. Was amazed when we were searching for a place to stay on the Thomas cook site and Olympic Holidays came up in the results.
Roll on September and sitting outside Pachos watching life go by.
Can even feel the warmth as I think about it.
