The Archaeologia is part of the Ministry of Museums and Antiquities and apart from preventing protected areas like Symi from disappearing under a sea of reinforced concrete and Faliraki-style holiday resorts are also responsible for supervising archaeological digs and sites all round Greece, from the Parthenon to Pontikokastro.

Unfortunately as is so often the case with these bodies, their resources are stretched to the utmost and there isn't always the funding available to do everything they want. Nonetheless, they do a pretty good job. :D

Lazy Days boat in Symi boat yard.

Postby David F » 08 Oct 2011, 12:35

Firstly -Old Thread Alert!
I loved this boat when I was on Symi this June and took loads of photos of it. Just read all five pages of interesting posts (plus a diversion to those fascinating Flickr images) but still didn't find the answers I was looking for. Anyone know how old Lazy Days is? When did it last operate? How long has it been beached at Hanari?
I'd love to know more! Regards, David.

It's been that long I can't remember, David. Every time I walk round to Harani I expect to see that it's collapsed but...

Thanks Kojak! There's got to be one of the Symi experts here who know the history. Spent hours on the internet yesterday searching for information but this thread was pretty much all I could find! I wait in hope...Regards, David.

In the late 1980s,early 90s, the Lazy Days was running trips down to Lindos, and I think around to Kalathea, from Rhodes Town, but I have no idea when it landed up in Simi, I think I have a photo of it disembarking visitors in Lindos, but it may take a bit of tracking down, will post it if i find it.

It's become something of an icon but the way it's "bending" in the middle I'm worried it may collapse and kill someone, expecially those working in Harani almost underneath it.

I can't be sure about this but I do remember it floating next to the slipway - perhaps 10 years ago.

Lol! Truly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I just love old things like this, Joanie. Couldn't help thinking about who had been on it, where it went, every time I saw it. Oh and those "moonlight cruises" it advertises on a sign -I want one of those (not on Lazy Days though -unless they do some serious restoration first!). Thanks to everyone who has replied here. Would love to see that photo Olga if you come across it. Regards, David.

 Back in 2009 i suggested a consortium of Symi lovers put their money up to save this boat. I think by now Joanie is right - let the old girl go and be thankful she made so many visitors fall in love with Symi and beyond. Sentimentality wont save this boat - better to let it go with perhaps a bit of dignity rather than a long drawn out death!!! It would be horrible if people remember this 'romantic' vessel as a crumbling 'has been'.

David. I asked a friend on Symi whose husband works in the boatyard. Apparently it's been there at least for 16 years and they are owed money for slipway fees!

David, Kojak is right the boat has been there for at least 16/ 18 years, the yard is owed a lot of money and they cannot track down the Belgian part owner (haven't seen him for years)and the Greek part owner (can't remember who now) won't pay. There are other legal issues as well hence the boat is still there and will remain so until the issues are resolved or the boat just falls apart which is is starting to do now, I remember going on her once around 20 plus years ago, but she wasn't the same as going out on the Triton as we used to do a lot more in those days the Triton did a lot more varied trips than always just going around the island.

The dates tie in, she wasn't there in 1994.
