Some questions from a Symi newbie!

Postby allofthegoodnamesaretaken » 10 Feb 2013, 18:38

Hello all,

Great to have found this site, perfect for a bit of preliminary research! We have booked 2 weeks at Irini Studios in July but can't seem to find much on it?

We are going self catered and don't drive, so any advice on local markets/shops and tavernas would be greatly appreciated! Also, any activities and travel to other areas (such as walkable beaches) would be great!

Thanks! AOTGNAOT!

Some questions from a Symi newbie!

Hi AOTGNAT and welcome

Have you dug through the 'Archive' area of the forum? That plus the search function should turn up answers to most of your questions.

A quick search using 'Irini' as the search term and the Search Forum set to 'Accommodation' came up with two hits. This seems to be the most helpful:

A look through the 'What to do' and 'Food and drink' areas would be helpful too.

If you still have questions do by all means ask here.

Don't worry about not driving. Whilst there are hire cars available there really isn't anywhere to drive! Panormitis monastery at the far end of the island is about the only place you may want to go to and a visit there is best done on one of the round the island boat trips.

Some questions from a Symi newbie!

Welcome AOTGNAT. You will have seen our post in the Archive highlighted by Allan so you will be aware of the steps up to the apartments. You are well placed for numerous excellent Tavernas. As they say, if Carlsberg did Tavernas it would be on Symi. You are located within easy walking distance of the harbour and so you have a huge choice : too many to cover in this post but the Lemon Goat at Vasilis is "historic" as the late Michael Winner would have said. Just writing it down makes me (D) yearn for May. Yialos also has a superb supermarket that you will get to when you walk from Irini through the wonderful mosaic courtyard of the church that you cannot miss. You never need to drive on Symi as walking around the harbour is wonderful and the bus and the water taxis will take you everywhere you need to go. From Irini to the harbour is only a 5 minute walk. It is well worth making your way up to Chorio (bus or taxi) to experience several good tavernas : drinks in Yanis Rainbow Bar or next door in Lefteris before eating in the most traditional Giorgios, or Zylygos, or Zoe's or The Windmills. A must is the Round The Island trip on Triton or Poseidon - a wonderful day out with a barbecue lunch that will amaze. I am sure that you will find sitting in any of the bars and engaging in conversation will result in great recommendations for walks (numerous and varied), beaches (Nos is an easy walk and our favourite lunch venue) which are serviced by water taxis, and places to eat. Don't be surprised to find people like us who return year after year as that is Symi - once found it is like a magnet - you will love it. Role on May and then September for us.

Some questions from a Symi newbie!

Postby Always Baking » 09 May 2013, 16:18

Hello Symi. l'm coming (going?) to Symi early Sept. l came for the day last month, and l immediately fell in love with Symi (obviously not alone on that one!) l've booked a flight to Rhodes, but havnt booked a return, as l dont know how long l should stay ?? l'd love to be bombarded with suggestions about 'how l should spend my days on Symi'. Really love the idea of some days out on a boat (with lunch ?) ..And l think l fancy spending some evenings up in Chorro, as l believe, that's where lots of the residents hang out. l've recently lived 16 yrs in Spain, so l'm not the beach bum l used to be, and l've always spent my evenings in 'non touristy bars' l got the feeling, from my 8 hrs on Symi, that it appeared a safe place for the single 50(ish) female. ...Roll on Sept 6th !
