Well, the suitcase is nearly down from the top of the wardrobe ..and like most folk, l'm thinking already what l cant pack (thank you Easyjet/RyanAir, Not!) l'm taking one heavy hardback, so wondered about book swaps on Symi, or second hand books to buy ?....And Which Book would you recommend for Symi? (that would be good to know)

I don't know about buying second hand books but there are plenty of places to swap books. The Sunrise and the Olive Tree in Chorio come to mind but there are plenty more. just ask around while you are there.

Recommended reading on Symi? Well, it has to be books about Symi surely ;)

James Collins' 'Jason and the Sargonauts' is a humorous tale set on Symi.

All of Anne Zouroudi's 'Greek Detective' books are good and the first one, 'The Messenger of Athens' is set on an island that is suspiciously similar to Symi ;) (Anne used to live on the island).

Finally the new release 'Midas' by Dominic Ranger is a thriller set partly on Symi and many of the characters in the book are based on island residents. Read it while you're there and you can have fun spotting them.

Kindle! One of the best presents I've ever had for travelling. Not only can it hold hundreds of books, you can push a couple of buttons and get that day's newspaper for 99p. You can even get free books - many of the classics can be downloaded free, along with a load of quirky stuff that you'd never read unless you were stuck in an airport. Of course I have 'Jason', Ann's stuff, and the excellent 'Midas' on mine.

Must agree with snapperjon, OH bought me a kindle for Christmas last year and it's brilliant when I'm on holiday as I no longer have to pack a few books in my suitcase. I usually managed to find somewhere to swap some but always like to have a few just in case. Most of the books I load on my kindle are free and if I don't like one I just delete it and move on to the next one ;)

I always enjoy books with a Greek theme when we're in Symi. Have worked my way through the Anne Zouroudi collection and would also recommend Victoria Hislop's 'The Thread' and her first novel, 'The Island'. You can also find some of her short stories for free in Google Play. This year I chuckled my way through 'It's All Greek to Me' by John Mole, a Greek answer to Peter Mayle's 'A Year in Provence'.

Kindle, cos the pages of your book either get blown into the water or eaten by the goats. Get a Kindle x

Take a paperback and reap the benefits AB! Stroll round apartments, hotels and the like and you will meet and talk to a variety of people, nearly all of whom have no objection to non residents doing a bit of book swapping. It's friendlier, more sociable and more fun.
Long live books!
