Greece Overnight Tax

Postby petrostoo » 11 Apr 2018, 12:41

I've just received notification from Olympic, "that from 1st January 2018 a new Overnight Stay Tax will be introduced by
the Government of Greece. This will be payable locally by the individual tourist on checking in to accommodation in Greece
and varies according to the official rating of the accommodation as follows"

Apartments(all categories): €0.50 per room per night.

Hotels: 1-2 star: €0.50 per room per night
3 star: €1.50 per room per night
4 star: €3.00 per room per night
5 star: €4.00 per room per night

Hope this helps those of you going to Symi this year to budget accordingly!
My wife Pam, and I will be visiting in September 2019 with Olympic and recently booked - hence the above info from them.

This tax goes directly into the Greek Central Government's coffers and not into the pockets of landlords/hotel owners. It's part of the austerity measures imposed on Greece by its international lenders. So the Nireus management collects the tax and deals with the admin associated with passing it on to central Government but gets no benefit from it itself.
