Receiving shipments while away from the island

Postby Pera » 23 Feb 2018, 18:07

Hi there! We are new here and wonder how you receive shipments of bigger items, for example from Ikea, when you are not on the island. Will the boxes be dropped somewhere where you can pick them up later, or will the cargo company call a contact person who would arrange pickup right when the boat arrives? We'd be grateful for advice! Thank you!

Hello Pera and welcome.

Most of the people posting on here, myself included, are visitors to Symi rather than residents but I'll try to answer your question as best I can.
All the major delivery companies have agents on the island, often just a business that receives deliveries regularly. Packages are usually left with the agent and they contact the customer to let them know there is something to collect.
The usual routine if you are expecting a delivery is to telephone all the likely agents on the island to let them know you are expecting something and leave your contact details. You can never be certain which agent will be used so it's best to call them all. It might take a bit of chasing around to track your packages down but they do turn up eventually.

It all sounds rather ad-hoc but it works very well.

IKEA is more complicated as it comes over on the Wednesday haulage truck and has to be collected ASAP from the nearest vehicle access on the Thursday morning. Don't order anything from IKEA while you are away unless you have someone on the island looking after your house, with keys and man power to get the stuff carried into your property. There's no where on Symi for stuff like that to be stored as the agents only have small premises. It is not unusual for unclaimed items to just be left on the dock! The same goes for any large items such as furniture. Small packages can be returned to sender by the agent if you don't have a valid contact number on the parcel or package so once again, make sure someone knows it is coming and can collect it for you.
