Bus/taxi up to Chorio

We are coming to Symi on 13th July 2018 on the late boat which arrives in Symi at 8.30 - 9 'ish'. Can anyone please tell me if we will be able to get the yellow bus or a taxi from the harbour to Chorio. If so, what time does the bus leave from the harbour and what time is the last bus. If we will have to use a taxi, do you need to book a taxi in advance? In which case, how do we go about it please.

Hello Devon and welcome.

The bus runs every hour on the hour from the harbour to Chorio. The time of the last bus varies with the season but in July it will be 23.00 perhaps midnight if the island is busy.

Taxis will run as long as there are potential passengers about. Midnight during high season is about as late as they get. Of course, they know when the ferries come in so they will be available for hire when you arrive. It shouldn't be necessary to book a taxi in advance, just hang around the taxi rank on the south side of the harbour and wait.

Having said all that, if you have accommodation in Chorio booked the property owner will probably arrange transport from the ferry for you so there should be no need to worry about taxis or the bus.

The evening ferry from Rhodes leaves at 7pm on a Friday. It starts its journey at Kastellorizo, but unless there has been bad weather on the outbound journey from Piraeus to Kastellorizo, making it late leaving to come back, it will normally be on time in July. It actually leaves Symi for Piraeus at 8.40pm, so needs to arrive by 8.30 at the latest to unload passengers and vehicles from Rhodes and load those heading for points north from Symi.
If you see taxis near the ferry arrival point they will have been prebooked, and as Allan says, the taxi rank is on the other side of the harbour, but there's no harm in having a word with the drivers, they may well agree to return and collect you after they've dropped off the people they're waiting for.

Thank you for the information, that's put our mind at rest.

Another question if I may. Is there anywhere we can buy food to do a BBQ? Whilst we appreciate the lovely food available on Symi and will make very good use of the restaurants/bars, our villa says it has a BBQ and it's something we might like to do on the odd night.

Is there a supermarket in the Chorio?

Best wishes.

Yes, no problem buying food in Chorio. There are two good supermarkets, a fruit and veg shop and a rather good butchers. If you need it, you can get sacks of charcoal at the supermarkets too.

Enjoy your BBQ!

Oh, and we should add that there are two bakeries in Chorio for the all-important bread to accompany the bbq. There's also a Greek cake shop to supply desserts.

And damned fine desserts they are too.
