MARAGARITA TIME

Days 1 - 3

It’s us again - we’re back. And if you don’t mind we will intrude on your time with our daily musings which some may find entertaining and informative whilst others might regard as a load of old twaddle :D Whatever your view we enjoy sharing our love of this wee corner of the world that we found all those years ago and can’t resist returning to.

Saturday : The Journey Begins - Aberystwyth to Swansea

IMG_4820.jpeg
Unlocked & Loaded

Having enjoyed the leisurely approach we took to getting to Sými in June we thought we would do it again. This time we set off for Swansea around 4pm having delivered Zoë safely to the cattery in the early morning before she could spot the cases being packed.

We had only decided to take the leisurely approach on the Friday so accommodation was limited. Swansea is a very lively city on a Saturday night as we were to find out !

We were able to book a Travelodge in the city centre and arrived there in heavy rain. Thankfully there was a council run multi-storey car park next door, but without a lift and there being no spaces on the ground level, the logistics of getting the overnight bags and our more substantial Sými cases to the hotel was a challenge but one we worked our way through.

We have a favourite Indian restaurant frequented by many an Asian family and it was as busy as expected for a Saturday night. Rasoi is on the waterfront and was a short walk from the hotel via a very convenient cocktail bar.

Perhaps it was the number of people in the restaurant around the time we had booked but whilst the food was very good it wasn’t its brilliant best on this occasion. But Rasoi when it is very good is good enough for us.

As it was bucketing down again it was a taxi ride back to the hotel.

Sunday : The Journey Continues - Swansea to Bristol Airport

When we woke the weather hadn’t relented and as we ate a very decent full Welsh breakfast two young bedraggled “Valley’s Girls” arrived in the breakfast area in their gladrags and carrying their shoes having experienced Swansea’s nightlife. When they said they had paid £140 for the night and had yet to benefit from the room we looked at each other with some rather vivid memories of long ago

D had thought the car park had auto number plate recognition but when he entered the reg number of “Nino” (our car) there was no charge. It was then a 10 minute call to the call centre to try and resolve this but they were unable to take retrospective payment but seemed happy enough with £2 for the Sunday all-day tariff. Somehow we think we may not have heard the last of this !

We drove along a very soggy M4 and decided to stop off at MacArthur Glen Outlet Village so we could add some kilos to our luggage.

As we got close to Newport the road signs informed us that the M4 was closed for roadworks and so we were diverted through the town with thousands of others and just accepted the time that this added to the journey.

We hadn’t flown from Bristol in well over 10 years but with the aid of the Maps App that connects to Nino’s display the route around the outskirts of Bristol saw us arrive at the Silver Zone parking around 4pm.

Bristol

A simple self-check-in to deposit the keys and we jumped onto the shuttle bendy-bus that dropped us at the Terminal Building where it is a 5 minute walk to the Hampton by Hilton. The only hotel actually on the airport.

Being relatively new the rooms are bright and spacious and the bar / restaurant is functional with a modest menu. The proximity to the airport is the big selling point and we discovered every room was taken when some people with cancelled flights tried to get a room.

Monday : The Last Leg - Bristol to Sými

Seeing the number of flights around 6am on the departures board the previous evening we had decided to buy Fast-track online to ease our way through security and that was a hit and well worth the £12 for both of us. We breezed through and were through easyJet speedy boarding and in our seats 4A&B by just after 6am.

A full flight took off just after 6:30 and landed Rhodes bang on time.

By the time we had our passports stamped the luggage was on the carousel and then a taxi whisked us to our usual taverna opposite the entrance to Akandia.

After a light lunch we walked to the Blue Star and boarded for the 4pm sailing that was delayed due to the number of HGVs that were loading. We finally set sail around 4:24 and arrived Sými about an hour later. It was great to see S&L on board.

Hello Symi

We were picked up at the new port area and taken round to the far side to Margarita’s apartments above Nos Beach where we last stayed in 2018. Yialos was busy and the harbour was full on both sides with yachts and a few super-yachts. We were greeted by Natassa who now runs Margaritas apartments and we were made very welcome.

And From Our Balcony

Having sat for most of the day we just dumped our bags and stretched our legs. We walked as far as the bridge at the end of the harbour saying our hellos as we went. On our way we stopped to reserve a table at Tholos and were very fortunate to be slotted in around 9:15 as the reservations book was full.

On the return we had a drink on the Nireus jetty as the sun disappeared behind us and we counted our blessings that once again we could be in this, our special place.

As we walked back we saw that Odyssia was doing a very good dinner service so that was good to see as they hadn’t been open in June.

Back to the apartment for a shower and a change of clothes and we then walked all of the 50 meters to Tholos. Having this as our nearest restaurant is simply superb. We were given a waterside table where the view of little old Sými having put on her sparkly evening dress was seducing everyone with her beauty.

IMG_4832.jpeg

Of course we started with the grilled king prawns and decided to have them with garlic butter rather than the Mari Rose sauce - that can wait for next time. We followed that with very light meatballs that came with real chips and a pork dish cooked with ouzo and mushrooms that simply melted and that had to have a side portion of lemon potatoes - divine.

After a large dish of complimentary watermelon we took the short stroll back to Margaritas and were sound asleep by 11pm.

You can intrude on my time!

It's great to get another Symi fix this late in the year from the master bloggers.

We are going to be drooling over all the food you guys consume and of course drooling over the views.

It will be dangerous having Tholos so close. :)

Day 4 : Tuesday - The Disappearing Day

Gone are the days of our first full day in paradise seeing us pack a beach bag and head out on a taxi boat, if in fact those days ever existed. Maybe they were just dreams. Normally it’s a catch up on sleep for E after the long previous day whilst D gets the blog started and so it was once again.

D was woken by the putt-putt of a fishing boat going or returning after a night on the water. He ventured out onto the balcony as the sun was rising, looking out on a very clear Turkish coast.

IMG_4862.jpeg
Morning View

It wasn’t long before Margarita, who like D is a “lark”, came down from her home above our apartment and D caught up with her news. Margarita has looked after us so many times and has become a firm friend and although she has passed the day to day business on she is still on hand. It is so lovely to be back in these beautiful apartments and being in No.4 of four we are quite secluded.

IMG_4863.jpeg
Our “Pet” Geko

D’s suggestion of a Nireus Hotel buffet breakfast soon got E moving.

The Nireus breakfast is something we always try and fit in when staying “down”. A lovely selections of juices, fruits, jams, cereals and yoghurt are all set out; and following that there is smoked sausage, thinly sliced bacon, fried eggs, omelettes, fresh tomato and French toast. Coffee, tea and a great selection of bread, croissants and pastries are all available. Sitting by the waterside with this sumptuous breakfast set us up for the day, and all for €18.

From the Nireus we popped round the corner to our nearest supermarket. One could easily be tempted by the Nireus every day but breakfast on our balcony watching the constant passing of different boats in such a tranquil setting is too inviting so we stocked up with the standard fare and headed back to the apartment.

IMG_4865.jpeg

IMG_4866.jpeg
Passing The Supermarket

By the time we had found a place for everything and had everything in its place and had the blog drafted by D; edited by E; and all the photos resized and ready to go it was past 1pm !

We therefore decided to take a stroll to “Comfy Chairs”, passing the throngs of day trippers, and had a cold small beer that hardly touched the sides so we had to order another. The weather is perfect and there is a sense of cruel satisfaction when D’s home weather station sends alerts to his iPhone telling us how much rainfall there is at home.

IMG_4864.jpeg
Two Small Beers - A Regular Order

From Cafe Aiglios we wandered around the back streets as E was looking for a beach dress (whatever that might be :-) so what else is a man to do in such circumstances but head to Alegrito where day-time Dimitri is on hand with an ouzo on ice. E soon followed and we sat watching the day boats return before heading back to the apartment.

Just like when we stay “up” when in Margarita’s we are blessed with a choice of restaurants within a short walk of our apartment and so we decided to return to Kaboz, a place we always feel we should visit more often. As we passed we asked for a sea side table to be held for us whilst we had a drink on the jetty of the Nireus - that’s two nights in a row and could become a habit although the call of Elpida’s is getting stronger.

IMG_4867.jpeg
Nireus Cocktails

We sat next to a like-minded lovely couple from Hemel Hempstead who are staying in Taxiarchis and who are regular visitors who love Sými.

We decided on the tuna salad that was a perfect blend of tuna, mayo, onion and potato; and octopus that was grilled to perfection.

IMG_4868.jpeg
Grilled Octopus at Kaboz

This was followed by the most flavoursome goat in lemon (D) and chicken with prunes (E) both accompanied by real chips and rice. E commented that her chicken with prunes took her back to the days of Lemonia at Zyllygos in Chorio it was so good.

We bade goodnight to the couple we had chatted to and as we passed we could tell that both Odyssia and Tholos had had another good evening. And as we reached our apartment we wondered, where did that day go !

Day 5 : Wednesday - Climb The Kali Strata Day

This morning D was woken by the rumbling of the early morning Blue Star. He is a light sleeper whilst E would sleep through an earthquake. He even poked his nose out of the door around 5:30 to see the ship all lit up and ready to depart but then his senses kicked in and he dozed for an hour.

It was then time for the first bread run to the bakery beside the bridge at the end of the harbour. D proved to be a bit early whereas the small bread was proving late and still baking in the oven so he walked around Yialos for a while watching all the various businesses opening up for the day. A time of day he loves.

IMG_4918.jpeg
View From The Bread Run

He returned to the apartment and whilst E prepared the usual breakfast D did the blog.

There is so much boat activity to watch from the balcony time just flies by and before we knew it 11am had come and gone.

IMG_4928.jpeg
Sebeco Arrives As We Have Breakfast

We headed to Cafe Aiglios for our frappe and then made the crazy decision to walk up the Kali Strata around noon. We are quite adept at coming down the steps but it has been some time since we last walked up. Of course the knowledge that a cold beer is waiting in Yiannis Rainbow bar is quite an incentive and off we set. We were a bit of a puddle when we sat down but it was worth the climb.

IMG_4922.jpeg

IMG_4923.jpeg

After a couple of small beers we headed down the school / lazy steps and walked around the busy harbour and finally gave in to the temptation of Elpida’s where a retsina and an ouzo was accompanied by the perfect mezes of salami, tomato, cucumber, tuna salad, pea salad, cheese and olives.

IMG_4925.jpeg

It was only around 3:30, and the crowds were starting to departing the Nireus and Kaboz to head back to Rhodes on the day boats, as we returned to the apartment where D made up for his early morning with a siesta and E walked up to the church behind our apartment.

IMG_4921.jpeg
E Goes To Meditate

The taxi boats are still returning at 6:30pm and the King Saron returned to Rhodes at the same time. This level of activity is quite alien to us as we are normally here in late May or early June and late September or early October. It does seem that the season may be extending.

D started drafting the blog as we are being taken to Tolis early Thursday morning. As ever we had discussed where we would eat throughout the day so we think we know but it is never finally settled until we are having our pre-dinner drink.

Those drinks were to be in Alegrito but every table was taken so our reserve was Cafe Aiglios. We had intended to eat at Haris but that also changed and we ended up in Trata where we were lucky to get the last table for two around 9pm. Just like it was in June every table was taken. This is never a surprise as this place has a long established reputation for excellent food.

IMG_4920.jpeg
Evening in Yialos

Greetings over we decided to have imam, tuna salad, mousaka and as there was no liver left, lamb chops. The imam is up there amongst the best of the best. The tuna salad is always good and the moussaka is excellent. The grilled chops were bang on.

We left a crowded restaurant and walked round the harbour that was still very lively around 10:30 and where food was still coming out of the Tholos kitchen. The islanders work so hard.

Day 5 : Thursday - Tolis Day

By chance D had bought two small breads on Wednesday so he was able to get up and focus on the beach bag and the blog as the sun rose over the hills opposite the apartment.

IMG_4927.jpeg
Fuel Delivery

We were being picked up at 09:00 so E was up soon after and on breakfast duties.

We got everything done and were waiting on the road outside the apartment at 09:00 precisely.

The air is so clear and the skies so blue that the views over Sými and out to Turkey, as we wound up the Vigla, were truly spectacular. At every turn on the winding road Sými reveals itself bit by bit until the point where you can see Pedi, Yialos, Nimborios and Dachta - a truly stunning sight.

We arrived in Tolis just ahead of the Sými Tours bus at around 10:00am and had the pick of the sunbeds that are free of charge. A few intrepid walkers arrived and gradually with mopeds and scooters arriving a decent number of people were enjoying this wonderful location.

IMG_4964.jpeg
Kalimera Tolis

It was the first swim for both of us and the sea was calm and warm - none of the grimacing that we had in June.

A group of very good swimmers arrived in the bay. Clearly an organised adventure holiday that had chartered a boat and had swim guides and all the necessary gear. They had an early lunch whilst we had our morning frappe / bira micri.

IMG_4965.jpeg
A New Small Beer

Then the Maria Day Boat had a swim stop in the bay before heading on to their next destination.

Before we knew it it was lunch time and we sat at one of the tables with the amazing views out over the bay. We had to have the Daphne Salad as that is a firm favourite and with that we had the lightest of courgette and cheese fritters and a very good sized piece of grilled chicken fillet that was moist and tender off the grill.

That took us until 3pm when it was time to read and snooze away the afternoon until we decided to have a last frappe and small beer before our host drove us back just ahead of the Sými Tours bus that departed at 6pm thus giving their guests a full day at Tolis.

IMG_4967.jpeg
Kalispera Tolis

Had we not been invited by a friend we would definitely have made sure we visited Tolis with Sými Tours as it is such a quiet location with the amazing family run Daphne Tavern. Tolis is not served by the taxi boats.

We have hit Sými at mosquito time as D is feeding them daily whilst they don’t find E appetising at all. Despite the “gallons” of Jungle Formula he douses himself in the blighters seem undeterred - he needs to find an alternative means of defence.

After a shower and a change of clothes we headed to Cafe Aiglios for the nightly ouzo with ice and retsina. Whilst sitting out a very happy couple from Denmark took the time to stop and thank us for the blog; soon after another couple, this time from Cumbria, did the same. It is so kind of people to appreciate what we enjoy doing and we thank them in return for reading all this nonsense.

Having had lunch, albeit a light lunch, we still decided to head to one of our favourite places that we have been remiss in visiting over the last few years. We walked the short distance to The Dolphin and shared a pizza and pasta. A number of local guys were having a great time and we just wish we could have understood the jokes that were obviously coming thick and fast. Other local faces were also enjoying this very understated little place. Over in the square some children were celebrating something with a short burst of fireworks and there was the occasional gasp and cheer from the gyros place next door as the football was on.

The pasta is always spot on and the bolognese sauce was perfect. There is an abundance of choice of pizza and the size is generous. We also like the fact that you can choose your sauce and the type of pasta you want to have with it. And they do a delivery service if that is of use.

IMG_4968.jpeg

IMG_4969.jpeg
Pasta

As we were finishing our pasta we were “accosted” :D by a pair of Sými visitors we have known for many years. Jb&M stopped and we caught up with where they had been and what they have been up to and they provided a good recommendation for a restaurant we have never visited so can we fit it in to our list we wonder. It was lovely to see them.

Passing some beautiful sailing ships at the clock tower we made our way home and slept soundly. So soundly that the mozzies came at night for E also !

Day 6 : Friday - It Should Have Been Nimborio Day !

This morning D was awoken by a feline territorial dispute.

Light was starting to come through the shutters around 7am and there was a bread run needed so off he went.

IMG_5016.jpeg
Margarita’s Apartments

IMG_5017.jpeg
Morning Walk Sunrise

After making sure E had her morning cuppa he disappeared again only to return dripping wet after having been for a swim across the road. Since Dimitri died we are told there have been legal issues with Nos Beach so no one can operate the taverna and so there are no sunbeds or umbrellas on the beach. As all beaches are owned by the Municipality people can still use the beach and during the day we see several people just lie on their towels or blow-up beds.

A small business has set up at the far end renting out jet skies and canoes and offering trips on an inflatable chair that wizzes around the bay at the back of a speedboat. We haven’t seen much activity beyond a group of children the other night who we presume were having a birthday party and we have to admit it looked great fun. How many days do we have left ? :)

After breakfast we made for Cafe Aiglios for our daily frappe. The plan was then to go up the road past Iapetos and over to the shack on the way to Nimborio and maybe go all the way or return by the coast road. However we needed more anti-mozzie defences and post-bite treatments so E went to the pharmacy on the bus-stop side of the harbour and just by chance, as D stood out admiring the boats, two seats in the cafe next door became vacant so he parked himself there and the small cold beers couldn’t be resisted.

We estimate the temperature the first few days has been in the high twenties but on Friday it jumped up a notch to the mid thirties with little or no sea breeze during the day. Whilst the idea of a cold beer at the shack was tempting the steep hill remained daunting so we just ordered another two small cold beers and, now don’t laugh, plan our remaining eight days (whilst writing this on Saturday morning we can report that Day 1 of “The Plan” has already gone south).

IMG_5015.jpeg
Planning

The port was busy with day boats and people arriving to spend the weekend on the island. We started to walk back to the apartment when we bumped into Neil and James - lovely to see the guys who were looking fit and well. We carried on to Elpida’s and had an ouzo, retsina and the small tapas plate that in effect consisted of three pintxos - salami, tuna and ham. Perfect lunch.

IMG_5020.jpeg
Small Tapas Lunch Elpida’s

We returned to the apartment. We find when we stay in Margaritas we spend more time on the balcony watching the boats come and go and just relaxing, reading, sorting photos, drafting the blog, snoozing. It’s all rather idyllic really.

It was soon time for dinner which we had booked at Tholos when we visited previously. First we went to the Nireus as D has become very fond of their pina coladas - boozy rather than creamy. There were more locals than tourists on the jetty and in the bar area and then we noted when we got to Tholos around 8:30pm that things were less busy. The island is starting to quieten down.

IMG_5019.jpeg
Cocktail Venue

Yes we had the prawns but this time we had them straight - without garlic but with the lovely Mari-rose sauce. We were also given a small side plate of carrot, broccoli and potatoes all in a light mayo dressing.

For mains E went for the well tried soutzoukakia and chose the rice rather than the chips. D tried a new dish of beef that had been braised with tomato and herbs and then finished in the oven on top of mashed aubergine. The creamy aubergine was a perfect accompaniment to the most tender of beef. A new standout dish.

IMG_5021.jpeg
Prawns Tholos

IMG_5022.jpeg
Beef On Aubergine Mash

We were offered a choice of watermelon or ice-cream as a complimentary sweet and crazy us went for the watermelon. When we came to pay we once again found that the retsina was “on the house”.

We took the short walk to the apartment only to find we should have bought some bottled water so E nipped back down to Tholos and retuned with that.

So Nimborio will have to wait and lazy days will have to try and release their hold on us.

Not than fond of prawns, but that photo has made me hungry for some. :D
Margarita’s Apartments are pricey, aren't they? They seem like a lovely place though. And to have Tholos as your go-to place around the corner, would be my dream come true.
Their hospitality and food have always been the best.
Anyway, please keep posting, can't get enough of those delicious photos. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay as well, of course.

Day 7 : Saturday - A Warm Day

As soon as the front door was opened around 07:30 we could tell it was going to be another warm day with temperatures in the mid to high thirties.

D went for a walk along the Nimborio road and then over by the church and down the steps behind Odyssia coming out at the boat yard. His T-shirt was soaking by the time he returned.

He went for a quick swim to cool down and then we headed to the Nireus hotel as by design we had run out of breakfast provisions and we really fancied a Saturday breakfast.

After yet another superb breakfast we went to the supermarket as the King Saron deposited it’s day trippers and was getting ready for its return journey to Rhodes. By the number of people with suitcases it seems quite a number of holiday makers were leaving the island.

We returned to the apartment and D started the blog and just as he was posting it the iPad gave up due to heat exhaustion so he had to wait until it cooled down. It isn’t often that the system message comes up saying to switch off due to temperature.

Our daily cleaner Kristina appeared fanning herself vigorously and we left her to it as we headed towards Nimborio. The sea breezes that only blew very occasionally were adding to the warmth as they were blowing hot air in our faces.

We reached the shade of the shack and had one of the most needed cold beers yet. This place is very popular and more and more cars were appearing as we headed back.

We reached the apartment and with the aircon on had a siesta.

We needed water so D went to the kiosk by the clock tower. Every table outside the Nireus was taken and people were sat along the walls waiting for the 18:00 King Saron to return and take them back to Rhodes.

We had decided that we would go to Haris for dinner as we had been there in 2018 and the food was so good we had wanted to go on our last night but found him closed. We were much later in the season for that visit. Our laziness in June saw us only descend from the village occasionally !

It was still very warm around 7pm as we walked round passing a couple of serious super yachts that were berthing. One with the status symbol of a black speedboat as security. One supposes that the next step “up” is to have a small flotilla of black speedboats escorting your super yacht into port.

We reached a very busy Alegrito but spotted a table for two at the back and grabbed that. Other people were rendezvousing there and Dimitri was shuffling chairs as best he could. P, who we we would regard as a “super visitor”, arrived and E had a long chat with her - it was lovely to see P again.

When we got to Haris again there was only one table and that was being used by the waiting staff for menus etc. However they saw us hovering and soon laid that table for us.

There was a large table of yachting guys from Germany that we sat next to and the dishes were coming out thick and fast along with orders of more beer - Oktoberfest in Sými :-)

We ordered beetroot and grilled octopus to start. We should have probably added skodalia to accompany the beetroot as it was quite a plain plate of beetroot. The grilled octupus was good but it came in second place to the one we had in Kaboz.

D ordered seafood spaghetti as he often does and E the beef stifado. This arrived before the starters were finished and we are no slouches when it comes to food :-) This never bothers us but is a reflection on how busy the place was,

We regard Zoe’s as the benchmark for beef stifado and Haris has a way to go to get the richness of sauce to achieve that. The beef itself was tender and the real chips were very good. D’s spaghetti came in a good tomatoes sauce with four mussels, about the same number of clams, some squid and some octopus.

We were sat at the door to the kitchen and witnessed first hand just how hard Haris and what appeared to be his lone assistant in the kitchen had to work to satisfy the number of diners the place had attracted. The two waiting staff were also rushed off their feet. We recalled that when we had visited in 2018 there were only a few tables taken.

Overall the food was very acceptable but not standout as it had been at our last visit.

With Haris Taverna being right next door to the taxi rank and there being a very impressive 4x4 taxi waiting with aircon we could not resist and Michaelis whisked us round to Margaritas in minutes and whilst E listened to the Rugby World Cup on the radio D failed and fell asleep.
