What3Words

Just though i'd share this mapping/direction website i've come across.

What3Words have mapped the world into 3m x 3m grids which they allocate 3 words to.

They also have apps which can link to current mapping programs on your phone to give you directions to locations live.

Now I love getting lost in the lanes in Chorio on Symi but I can really see a use for this to pinpoint a location of a particular Taverna or great view.

You could also use to locate turning points in a walking route etc..

Try this link to see where the Rainbow bar is located. (frequented by many on here) Clicking on the OpenStreetmap to give quite a good map but a little outdated.

In my blog later in June I can link to the Tavernas visited or a great view.

It will not be something for all but I like it!

That looks interesting!

Looking forward to seeing your blog posts. It'll be fun to see which words are allocated to your favourite Symi locations, I hope they're not too rude! :D

Like the idea of defining popular locations. But given that even the municipality has no accurate map of Chorio, and none of the satellite-mapped on-line services has anything better, actually finding your way could be harder that it appears. Why? Well, every year some of those one-person-wide alleyways that have been choked with rubble since 1944 are cleared as properties are restored, while builders temporarily block others with piles of building stone while they are doing restorations. And the satellites can't see all the alleyways as pass under buildings or are obscured from above by fig trees growing in ruins. Good luck - I'm sure it will work for finding the Rainbow, but getting to the Museum from some other part of Chorio might be harder.

I agree with Andy that this won't be a lot of use for finding your way around the village but it still looks a lot of fun! :)

The Open Streetmap is notoriously awful, nicely showing the downside of "Community Driven" projects and is best avoided if you expect accuracy.
One fun use of What3Words occurred to me though...
I'll be on the island shortly before you Silverfox so I could leave something (can't think what) in one of the 3m X 3m squares for you to find with only the three words to go on. A kind of "Chat Page Geocaching" thing. You could post a picture of the item in your blog when/if you find it.

That would be worth trying Allan to see how accurate it is.

I suppose it depends on the app and the map used when navigating.

I love Chorio and wandering the lanes Andy and hope that they didn't lose too many to the floods.

Ps...finding the museum is easy when you've stayed at Sevasti!

:)

Interesting website but your inbuilt homing instinct would allow you to find Yannis Rainbow with your eyes shut.

Not long now :D

To say we've never met you know me so well.

I really don't need this app as I love the ability to get lost!

Only 10 working days left for me!

:D

As we see it, it is one of those very clever ideas but it may be far more effective outside big cities and areas where addressing of properties and places are quite sophisticated and established although our SatNav can still take us to the wrong place even when given a post code in a city.

Here in our small rural village of Llanddeiniol our post code covers quite a lot of properties in an area of lanes, tracks and small roads. House names help if they are visible from the road but we do get knocks at the door from delivery vans, new posties, etc. trying to find a property (often more complicated by a Welsh name). What3Words by mapping the globe with a matrix of small squares and providing each with a unique three word reference makes it far easier for a delivery van if say the likes of DPD used the W3W addressing convention rather than the normal postal address.

D admits that the lack of a logical connection between the three words and the place threw him to begin with as he was looking for a link when none existed.

If loads of users adopt the W3W concept then it could change the way we find places.

We think that's it :ugeek:

Hey D&E, thanks for your reply I'm none the wiser but thanks for trying. I will look at it but I don't know why. Oh could you pretend you're back on Symi please, I miss your daily writings!!!

I don't think Symi has sophisticated and established addressing of properties and places! There's one postcode for the whole island, and many properties have no recognisable address. George the postman looks at the names of the recipients of letters and parcels, and just knows where he is likely to find each of them during delivery times. If they aren't around, he'll leave mail with a relative or at their favourite bar. As for delivery drivers - not really a problem when most properties have no road access and so no deliveries.

Great summing up and my thoughts entirely having had to deliver in the countryside, in the dark, and trying to look at house names. I don't do this anymore.

I can see it being useful on places like Symi to locate a view, building or turning on a path depending on how any mapping software works on your phone and if you have any sense of direction.

I will test it in a few weeks when on Symi.

Actually that was on Rhodes when I was on my way to Symi.
Now, according to the three words app, I am in earplug.algebra.acceleration :D
