Hi everyone, Its been a while since we logged back onto the forum since last year. We did have our trip to Symi in September at Taxiarchis and as expected we were having a wonderful holiday . Unfortunately we had a call from home as my father in law had suffered a cardiac arrest very unexpectedly and we had to cut short our visit. It is at times like this when you see the best that a place like Symi has. The call came in the early hours and frantically we had to find a flight, combined with 'can we get off the island to catch it', pack, cancel the outings we had booked, return prepaid ferry and restaurant bookings. With very good fortune we had Frank and Eva to help and we cannot express enough the help they gave us to ensure we got to the airport to get back home. They continued to help by cancelling all our plans and even managed to have the ferry company to keep our return ticket open for 12 months. we are forever indebted to Frank and his family for what they did for us as we did catch the flight and get home which in the end John didnt win the battle and we lost him a couple of days later. We are returning later this month to continue our love affair we have with Symi and we will be staying with Frank and Eva. It has been difficult to complete this post as I thought it would be as it all comes flooding back however, the memories of what Frank and Eva did for both of us brings a tremendous amount of comfort and we are so looking forward to meeting Frank again on the quayside on the 30th.

Hi Polychops
Thank you for posting your story, it can't have been easy having to think about that sad time over again.

I really do know what you mean about the love and support you get from people on Symi in time of need. I suffered health problems during my visit this year and one of the first things that Frank said to me was "You have my phone number. If you need anything, anything at all just call me anytime." So many other people, Greeks, ex-pats and tourists said much the same thing. It was comforting to know that I was surrounded by so many caring people.
Like you, I cut the holiday short (Full marks to Jet2 for making the process of changing the flights so painless) and Frank was very helpful printing the boarding passes for us and making sure we could get to the ferry on time. He was keen to help even though he was losing money by us leaving a week early. "Your health is more important" he said.

I know a regular visitor who refers to the people on the island as "My Symi family" and she's right, that's exactly how it feels.

Symi is a very special place. Frank and family are very special people.

So sad to hear your story Polychops but it's also filled with warmth, hope and friendship which generally sums up Greece and Symi for sure.

We stayed with Frank this year and it was great and the family were there if we needed them. It's great you are returning and you can be sure of a great time!

@Allan Hope the recovery is going well as we need to meet for that beer sometime soon!

Indeed the Symi family is real and long may it continue!

You all take care and hope to see everyone soon! :)

Pollychops sad but heartwarming post plus Allan’s predicament reminds us of an answer we often give when friends and family ask us why we keep returning to the same place - we always respond “it’s the people”.

We always find the Symi welcome so genuine and unconditional - they are a generous people who truly care.

Enjoy Taxiarchis Pollychops and we hope your health is better Allan.

Definitely - especially those of us who have 54 weeks to wait until we're back on our favourite Greek island ;)

Hi Pollychops,
As we write we are thinking that you must almost be there - safe journey over.
Have a wonderful time up in the village and enjoy Symi - we know you will.
