The President's Visit - a question answered

Postby Adriana » 21 Jun 2006, 07:56

When the President's visit was first mooted Symi Town Hall approached the Symi Visitor to provide accommodation and at that stage the dates given were the 16th and 17th of the month. The property in question, chosen because it could house the entire presidential entourage and was very secure and private, is the same one that is also being used for the filming of a Greek television series. When the dates were changed to the 19th and the 20th of June it was no longer feasible to use this property as it would have interrupted the shooting instead of merely delaying it by a couple of days, and contracts had already been signed. Alternative properties were investigated for suitability and the decision was made by the President's Secretary that the appropriate solution was to move next door, to the Aliki Hotel.

The President's Visit - a question answered

Quite right too Adriana. What a fabulous place to stay. We stayed there for years whilst our son was young during the 80's. It was in the days when the road outside was all potholes, long before the Nireus was built, and you could sit outside the Aliki all night drinking and chatting, with no sound apart from the lapping of the water on the steps, and the occasional goat bell and a donkey braying somewhere in the distance. You could help yourself to wine from the fridge, and tell the lovely George how much you'd had the next morning! Oh happy days.

Now we always stay in a villa, but we were broken-hearted when we passed by the Aliki one day and saw they'd painted all that lovely wooden interior green! But there you go. Wonder if the President had our old room, A3.
