The bus had problems when I was there in late May. I think it got a little hot and spilled some oil. We sat (- in the HEAT) in the bus while the mechanics looked at it, Lakis wrote something on a tissue and off we went again.
Re the lack of number plates - when we were walking in Crete a month ago, nearly every new car had either no plate at all or a handwritten one on a bit of paper stuck on the windscreen. Since most vehicles we saw when we were in the mountains were shepherds' pickups we weren't too surprised by this (no plate; no tax, we surmised) but it was the same in Heraklion too. Maybe there's a Hellenic nation-wide scarcity?
It's not so much that there is a new bus - but where will they dump the old one? Previous model was abandoned at the bottom of the Pedi Road. Is there a grave yard for the Symi Bus????????
What new bus? We were there for the last two weeks and the good old green bus is still going strong, with an appretice driver in tow with Lakis. We did hear rumours of a new bus (grey one parked up where the boat comes in) but it didn't move for the two whole weeks we were there. I did hear a rumour it was too big, but again not verified by anyone. Its still 1 and worth it for the fun factor alone.
