Many thanks to Martin Ripley who emailed me to let me know that the butterfly is a Scarce Swallowtail. According to Martin they are quite common in Greece, particularly in Symi. Has anyone else been aware of them?

Looking at the state of the leaves on your tree Adriana, I bet you're glad that particular caterpillar finally decided to take up flying 8-)

The butterflies I associate with Symi are the orange-coloured ones with the strange shaped wings that give the impression they are flying backwards!
