I was fascinated to see the photos of the finishers of the Symi Marathon and wondered if anyone knew more about it. What is the route? How long do they take to do it and WHO does it!!

It used to be run in August but this year it was postponed until the first Sunday in September. It is in memory of the Abbott at Panormitis and two other Greeks who were assasinated during the Second World War. The route is quite simple on paper - from Panormitis monastery at one end of the island to Yialos at the other end, a distance of about 19 km, but does involve some steep climbing and an equally steep descent. It is open to anyone who wishes to participate and fit visitors have run it in the past.

I'll check with Vassilis at the Gym as he's one of the organisers.

This is starting to sound like the beginnings of a Symi chat page team! :D

There's also a junior race from Nimborio to the bridge in Yialos each year.

Not likely! Just curious! I don't even run for the bus! LOL!

I'll hold your water bottle for you though Adriana if you want to do it next year ...

No likely, Sapphire, but my husband keeps threatening to do it as he was a keen marathon runner once upon a time.

Good day
Two years ago I won the fear of shattering the
stories of my Grand Mother and My Father
about the most beutifull iisland of the world
and at last I visit Symi.
This year I came back and I run the 24 kilometres
from Yalos to Panormitis in 159 minutes, so relaxing
and nice that the best part was the uphill section
Yalos-Megalos Sotiris
I promised my self to do itevery year. If anybody
is interested I'll run again somewhere in the
begining of May.

Congratulations, 2456. :D It is not an easy run, but the route is certainly spectacular.

When you come in May, do call in at our office in Yialos and introduce yourself.

:)

At the risk of appearing pedantic, I think the correct term for what happened to the Abbot of Panormitis and his two colleagues is "summarily executed" rather than "assasinated". From what I have read, the three were taken from the monastery by the occupying soldiers and shot, in other words they were aware of what was going to happen to them - rather than being picked off without warning, which the latter word suggests. The race is a marvellous way of keeping alive their memory.
