David managed to get here this weekend for the Panormitis Festival - he's just popped into the office. 8-)

The weather we've been having, he's definitely here in the winter!

Never been in winter but would like to.

Then again.... Looking at last Friday's satellite picture, would you rather be in the UK, Denmark or Symi? 8-)

Who's been to Symi in the winter?

The latest I've been was the last week in October. We watched the Ochi Day parade in Athens on TV - the Symi parade was cancelled as it rained literally all day  It was still relatively warm though so the dress was shorts, T-shirt, umbrella.... and of course..... SOCKS! :)

Who's been to Symi in the winter?

For some time I was keen on coming to Symi in the winter - particularly when the flowers were at their best (which Jean Manship claimed was in February, though it must be many years since she last spent February on Symi!). But then a few years ago I went to Turkey (Kas) in February - some good flowers, but very cold and wet.  Rather dampened my enthusiasm for a February trip to Symi!

The other off-putting thing about a winter visit is if the Dodecanese Express continues not to run, and the only way of getting off the island is a 6.00 a.m. ferry :? - likely to be an even less attractive idea in mid-winter than it is in mid-summer! :(

Who's been to Symi in the winter?

Postby Andy W » 07 Nov 2006, 13:52

I did do a winter visit to Symi a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I chose the week of the freak snowstorm....
Despite the one day of abnormal weather I enjoyed myself a lot and I'd recommend it to others. Like everything else there are pluses and minuses, which I could go into if anyone's interested.

I will certainly be visiting again in winter - this winter in fact.

I'd love to visit in winter.

Usually used all my holidays up at work by then though! We keep saying one year we are going to try and get for Christmas or Easter.

The wild flowers are usually better in March/April but the almond blossom and cyclamens are best in January/February.

Every winter is different and last winter was definitely the mildest I have spent here.

2003/2004, the year of snow on the Vigla, was one of the wildest!

We've been at the end of October for Ochi Day and in April for Easter but I would like to come in the Winter. Next year in Symi, perhaps.
Talking of alliteration: "lurid lingerie and lavender lipstick" (or was it the other way round?). Crikey. Adriana gets more poetic every day. When do you publish your next book?

I once spent Christmas on Symi which was fantatic. Walked over to St Nicolas beach on Boxing day with the sun shining down and did lots of partying in Jeans and the Vapori.
An 'expat'Carol singing afternoon with mince pies in what was then the disco will stay in my memory forever!

I'm glad you asked, Allan. All I could find was a bar in Paisley and I rarely enter licensed premises.

Its just a bit of a faff to post, entering codes, remembering passwords etc. Is there a bar called Paddy Malarkies in Paisley? I went to school there, it must have been later than that. I thought it meant a bit of a fuss.

Ah, right that makes sense now thanks!

I agree it is a bit of a faff having to log in but you shouldn't have to enter any codes to post once you are logged in.

Also, you should be able to get your PC to remember your password for you by ticking the box on the main forum page. Although for some reason that doesn't work on my PC at home

It's called old age, Sorella.

I'm with you, Kon, I don't think I would like to visit in winter, holidays for me are all warmth and sunshine and social intercourse. I don't fancy holed up in some bar, probably by myself, watching a Greek soapie and sipping a hot toddy. :(
I visited Symi one Easter and it was really weird, the sun was in the "wrong" place, all the shadows were different. Added to that all the summer awnings were down, tables and chairs of most restaurants in storage and it was bloody cold.
If I remember correctly I fled to Egypt via Rhodes and Crete to Alexandria :) and came back in July.

 I can recommend a very useful bit of software called Roboform, from [/color]. It remembers your log-in and password for as many different sites as you want (up to 30 for the free version, an unlimited number if you buy the full works), and enters them with a single click. It also fills in forms for you if you want, using stored information like your name, address, telephone numbers etc - even credit card details if you want to entrust it with that. :)
