And talking of rough crossings, as we were, the worst ever was one year to went to Tilos. It was so bad, and in a VERY small boat, that I truly did not think we would make it. The only way I stayed 'calm' was by singing 'Onward Christian Soldiers' at top of my voice, and couldn't even hear myself over the roar of the wind and sea and waves crashing over our little boat. Fortunately no one else could either.
The whole deck was awash with everything from the shelves including broken glasses and various bottles of booze rolling from one side of the desk to the other. We loved Tilos, but NEVER made the trip again. Bit dis-concerting hearing one of the crew in a bar a few days later talking about the trip, and saying he also though we'd not make it! The whole trip took nearly 4 hours. It was hell. Anyone had a similar experience? Apparently the Tilos locals were used to seeing poor passengers crawling off the boat on all fours, and believe me many did! AND, the captain turned around and made his way back, because he had a pick-up on Rhodes the next morning! Oh Greek sailors eh?
