Greek dancing lessons

Postby maziemoo » 14 Jun 2007, 15:38

Has anyone ever taken up the option of Greek dancing lessons with the W.I. whilst visiting Symi? I'm keen to sharpen up my act :) !!

Only teaching (if you could call it that) I've ever had was from a very energetic young man  by the name of Dimitris on Samos a few years ago, which as I recall, involved rather a lot of dancing on tables (that damned ouzo has the weirdest effect on me  )...oh and hanging on to the pegola-type thingy overhead just in case the table gave way underneath us!!

I've been promising myself I'd take up the opportunity of learning when I come to Symi so thought in September I'd make it my mission to have a go.

Anyone else interested in joining me? Promise I'll lay off the ouzo beforehand ;)

Last summer the teacher of greek dance, Sevasti, was giving lessons for all on Friday afternoons at 7 pm at the high school. There were posters all around. I hope she will do it again. It was very funny and both greeks and foreigners were participating 8-) .In the winter she has courses for the children and the adults as well.

Sure and you don't need a skirt. Remember the greek dances is often a chain with a man in the beginning and the end. God knows why?

We are Alpha and Omega, Tove, the beginning and the end, we keep everything together! I can remember the odd night in the Meltemi when Michaelis danced on the very small circular table near the entrance. the ceiling fans were a distinct hazard though.... :o

I won't argue with you Kojak, but that discussion could be as long as the summer is lasting in Symi. I just had another experience some weeks ago at Glaros Bar (opposite Jeans) where the little kiosk man (think he's Michaelis too) from the square in Chorio was dancing very late at night too and everybody was enjoying it. I always thought he was a very quiet man, but dancing he knew 8-) :D

Well I've either been mixing with the wrong crowd or going home too early because I've missed all of this.....I hope I have better luck in September because it all sounds so much fun :)

Mazie and Mille (sounds like a girl band!), having chatted online to the girl who's running The Alethini on the Pedi road, we should try and organise a group outing to the Bouzouki night there one weekend. It should be hilarious if nothing else! 8-)

The Bouzouki night sounds a great laugh :D . Pity I will be home before the end of September crowd arrive. Looks like Findlay and I will just have to go ourselves. Kojak, do you know when the Bouzouki nights are held?

Bouzouki night at the Alethini is every Saturday night. They are open 24 hours a day so you can fit in lots of practice.
