Prices for docking in harbour.

A friend of mine has a yacht 53 footer in which he bought a few years back in greece, he is sailing around the greek islands this year ,the yacht is based in the Cyclades now, he told me that it costs him around 800-1,200eu a week to dock on most island harbours ,is that a reasonable price or is he paying too much ,he has never been to Symi and the Dodeckanisa (cant figure why )but is thinking about visiting this year he loves living on the boat. 6 adults +2 kids this year are going. How much would it cost in Symi to dock in the harbour for a week?

Hi Kon, prices are usually set by the Greek port authority so they should be pretty much the same countrywide. They are calculated on the length of the boat and 53 feet is pretty substantial.

Marina fees can vary.

The cheapest is to swing at anchor in places like Pedi. The minute there are lines ashore and umbilical cords for water and electricity hooked up the metre starts turning!

We are expecting a freind of ours to visit us from Marmaris again this year. He moored overnight for 2 nights in Pedi 2 years ago, also spent a night at Panomitis. Very good holding for anchor at both.

Things must have changed at Panormitis over the last 25 years, then. I remember the holding there as non-existent. We tried backing the bower anchor with the kedge and still slid along, praying that the wind didn't spring up. Never mind, it was my introduction to Symi.

We spent many exciting evenings rescuing charter yachts as they dragged across Panormitis bay while their charterers, happily oblivious, dined at the taverna.

:D

The general rule is that when the first one starts to drag, it picks up all the others as it goes... an armada of unmanned boats :o

Then, having got the mess sorted out, in the middle of the night we would be awakened by plaintive souls rowing round in circles waving flashlights, looking for boats which were no longer where they had left them. :?

He must have picked up the only holding in the bay, he always has been a lucky devil, a warning for us when we visit Symi by Yacht, also any others visiting.

Catabatic winds come barrelling down the mountain in the evenings. Saw one once that actually flipped not just the inflatable dinghies but actually capsized and sank a small open wooden fishing boat moored near the army camp. More than mildly hair raising! :o

Is this it, Benedetti?

Obviously an anabatic wind that put it up there.
