Hi Symi folk

I like Symi and we've just had a great week staying in Gialos at the Maravelios studios (nice roof terrace). I don't know if anyone else has views on this, but the only negative I have is over what seems to be the increasing volume of the sound sytems coming from some of the bars. (OK I could mention the bikes but I won't)

It seems that the competition amongst some of the bars is to have a louder sound system than their neighbours and so it goes on. I don't really have much sympathy for this as a small island strategy. Maravelios is some way off from the centre and it must be worse for those closer and for the boats in the harbour.

I don't know, maybe it's me just getting old!

My sympathies. Our holiday last year was spoiled by the thumpa coming from the club next door, which made the apartment shake until 3 or 4 every morning. We tried earplugs and running the airconditioning to kill the noise but nothing really seemed to help. Apparently, the club owners are supposed to turn down the music at midnight but nobody takes any notice. The only answer is to choose somewhere a little further away from the clubs, which we have done this year.

There was a law which required the music to be turned down at midnight so it couldn't be heard much outside the bar, and then turned off at 1 or 2am. It used to be strictly enforced but that seems to have gone by the wayside. The "Gaza Strip" seems to be the only offender, perhaps it's not classed as a residential area now.

Thanks Kon.
There IS something magic about Symi.
Gialos and the Hora are so special. Our favourite walk was to Agios Vassilios beach. If we didn't get lost, we could do the walk from Gialos in under 2 hours and about the same going back. The peace of this beach is like nothing else I know.
Our favourite eating places were Tolos (past the boatyard) and Nereida Fish taverna by the square, and the Akti Cafebar on the front was a good place to watch the world go by.
I'll stay in the Hora next time.

Good stuff Ozzie Geoff.
None of this shrinking violet, english reserve. I was once at a cricket dinner and went with a spirited Aussie lady (has to be said, spirited in more ways than one) and the guest speaker started on with some unpleasant, racist jokes.
After a few ominous hisses, my companion hurled (with some accuracy) a bowlful of marshmallows at him - but it was me got the blame!

Now, now..we all know where this could end....

A spirited Aussie lady, Nige? Are there any other kind?
Most of them have been around the block one or two times and know more tricks than a performing seal..
Err, what happened after the dinner? :)
