Greek wine bought in the tavernas is usually young and to be honest sat it the sun it tastes ok. You can buy a box for your stay if you are staying long enough.

I wouldn't bother bringing any back as it never tastes the same.

Aldi do a nice Greek white wine.

We find ordering house red or white does the job. If you go to Giorgina's Supermarket, she will happily give you some advice on better quality options. Yammas :D

Greek wine has improved massively over the years.

We recall with great fondness from our early days one of the best known “entrepreneurs” on the island having a restaurant with a wine cellar where a great deal of importance was placed on the wine experience. One would be taken down to the cellar where the wines would be explained in detail and the selection process was almost ceremonial.

It would then arrive at the table and with great flare and flourish the cork would be removed and a small amount poured for approval. Having bought at the mid range price we did not expect something that would be better sprinkled on chips and of course being the kind of folk we are said it tasted lovely and consumed the bottle.

That was then and now Greek wine can be very enjoyable and Silverfox is correct that it always tastes better in Greece although we have had some Greek red from M&S that has travelled very well indeed.

We are mainly retsina and ouzo drinkers (with the odd beer or two thrown in) as our many archived blogs will bear witness to and this has always proven to be a safe bet.
