Great film, Kon! It was good to see the colossus again. It's ironic that the Colossus and the old Panormitis were condemned as rust buckets (which they were!), but they never sank or ran aground like newer ships seem to have done lately. Old-fashioned seamanship perhaps?!

What year would you say it was from?

My memories a tad hazy when the Colossus went to the dockyard in the sky, but I'd say probably no later than mid 1990s

Just had a reply from the poster of the video. He says it was recorded in September 1997.

Must have been almost the last voyage, Allan! I've asked Hugo if he can tell me when she was scrapped.

"Giftschrank" who recorded the video has posted a couple more of the dear old Colossus on its trip to and from Symi on September 20th 1997.

He's also just joined us here on the chat page - welcome!

Good evening, my friends!
Yesterday I took the "old" film from 1997 and I cut away all the Simi-related stuff. The result are the two videos, that Allan postet here. What really happened with "Colossus"? The other ships "Simi" and "Simi II" are still on their way, but they also are not the youngest ones...

And now: Sorry for my very broken English, thank you!

Yassas!!

Hello giftschrank and welcome to the noticeboard. The oldest ship I can remember from the 1980s was the Panormitis. It used to do the Wednesday morning run, I think, from Kos to Symi and then Rhodes. I do remember it left Symi at 05.45am. The Colossus and the Panormitis were the oldest boats and I think they were both scrapped. I have emailed a friend on Symi to find out the date.

I recall sailing down from Kos to Symi overnight on the Panormitis in ?1983, calling en route at Nissyros and Tilos. I 'slept' on deck but actually spent the hours watching the most amazing stars through the iron framework which would have supported a canopy, had the dear old rust bucket run to such a thing. We landed on Symi at dawn - I still have some photos which I took on the harbourside when there was absolutely no-one around.

Panormitis was succeeded by, I think, the Miaioulis - another one which must by now be many fathoms under.

Good evening (here in Vienna), my friends!

I am now uploding a mediaval film from 1990 which shows the ferry "NIKOLAOS X" between Rhodes and Simi. It's nothing special, but it brings back a lot of memories (and it shows my first footsteps using a camera).
When the upload is complete, i will post the URL.

Yassas, and have a lot of Retsina!

Here it is:

Another nice video - thanks Giftscrank. I wonder how many thousands of day trippers the Nikolaos has taken to Symi and back over the years?

Your video taken from the light aircraft was discussed a few months ago Were you the pilot?

Nice one Giftschrank, the days of Nikolaos X, Symi 11 and others racing to Symi with their full load of day visitors seem to be a thing of the past, or is it my immagination. The numbers of day visitors seem less over the past trips.

Hi, Allan!
No, I wasn't the pilot. At that time I was extremely interested in aviation, and by coincidence I found in the hotel an announcement in a local newspaper from a pilot who did roundflights. Five minutes later I called him, one day later we were on flight. Today Stelios has his Pilot academy:
I hope to see him next year again to take new films with a better camera and much more experience how to use a camera!
