Hello all, we are looking forward to revisiting Symi early next month and could do with some advice from those who know the island so much better than us.
Two questions really, one is does anybody know where we can get our hands on a good map of Symi, we intend to explore on foot as much as possible and dont want to get lost to often. Also, whe we last visited we ate most of our meals down in the harbour, I must say all great food, but having read lots of your posts recently we have come to realise that we have missed out on some interesting eateries up in the chorio, any recomendations? (and directions) would be most welcome.
Thanks for your time folks.

Best map we have found is by SKAI http://www.mapsworldwide.com/sku_38151.htm. This is almost up to OS standard. We got a copy on the island, but for some deeply strange reason they seem to be in short supply.

There is a map of Symi for hikers (not that we walk anywhere) produced by SKAI XARTES, ISBN 978-960684592-5. The Symi map is number 341 and we picked this up in Rhodes from the newspaper stand which is situated in the entrance/gateway to the New Market opposite Mandraki Harbour.

Thanks Donna - the link works perfectly despite the preceding gibberish and, for under 7 quid including postage to UK, it's a bargain! Not that we manage to do much walking nowadays but who knows - maybe the map will inspire us! Could have done with it 20 years ago when we were regular walkers on Symi.

Yup, that's the map we've been using - really good.

And Jenine has a copy in the Olive Tree. We were able to buy a copy on the island, but others couldn't find one, so may be best to get one before you go.

The kiosk in the Vapori/Bella Napoli corner, opposite the bakery and Antoniades' hardware store, has them at the moment.

Thank you all for the advice ,My map has arrived in the post so we shouldnt get too lost wandering around all the interesting places you have mentioned. Now all I have to cope with is the news that olympic have booked us into r room with a 'town view' at the Nerius, soubnds like we might be staring at a wall for a week unless I can work some sort of magical charm on my travel agent.Has anyone ever seen one of these back of the hotel rooms at the Nerius ? I think we might just end up drinking all the Mythos to drown our sorrows.
Once again THANKS ALL who knows we might get to meet some of you one day.

If you get a second floor room at the back of the Nireus with a balcony it's really nice to look on to the garden I have stayed in one of the first floor rooms that had terrace that looked out onto the wall but most of the rooms at the back have a view of the garden or paths and steps around the hotel. If you can get an upgrade to one of the front rooms the views are wonderful or you can just sit out front and drink mythos

Do you know how much they are on Symi Adriana? Just been on the website to order one as didn't think it was bad for €8.99 but by the time they add the extras on it's €12 so think I'll chance it when I get there. It would be nice to find some new walks :)

Gemma - I bought direct from Terrainmaps (link provided by Donna) using my Paypal account and cost (including postage) came to €6.82. Money (small though the amount is) still going into the Greek economy although not directly to Symi which it would if you bought there. Perhaps some kind person (Adriana??) could get you one whilst they're still available and you could pick up and pay when you're there?

Hmm, I've been clicking away on that page but can't work out how to order one

Hi Gemma - click on English at the bottom of the page (sorry, that bit's blindingly obvious but you never know!) then look for 'Online Store' in the left hand side and click. Scroll down to Symi map No 341 (you'll notice you save 70 cents by buying on line) and click 'add to cart'. Fairly straight forward from there - just click 'checkout' and fill in rest of order form. Can't guarantee that the site is trustworthy as we've not received the map yet (only just ordered) but will let you know if/when it turns up. Good luck!

Don't know what I was doing before Sue but I ended up with some sort of google translation, so although the descriptions were in English the info in the box was still in Greek  . I've ordered one now for the bargain price of £6.80, so much cheaper than the other link which was for exactly the same map :D

Thanks very much for your help :)

You're welcome Gemma. AND you'll be pleased to know that mine arrived this morning!!!! Ordered around 5pm on 15th - sent on 16th - arrived 18th. How's that for service? Certainly a lot quicker than a lot of stuff I order in the UK. The map is excellent quality, comes in a plastic folder and, although I haven't had time to study in detail, seems to have all the features described. What a great find!

Don't think my map will arrive as quickly Sue. I had a really nice email thanking me for my order but it won't be despatched until 26 August as all the staff are on holiday - 2 of them on Symi of all places 8-) Not a problem as I've got 4 weeks yet so I've got plenty of time.

My map had arrived when I got in from work this evening 8-) I think it's a great price considering it includes postage from Athens :D

An alternative, which has walk descriptions as well as a good map, is Lance Chilton's Walks in Symi. I think Adriana and Wendy used to keep copies for sale in the Visitor Accommodation office - no doubt one of them will confirm whether they still do.

You can order direct from the publisher (Marango Books) - see

Enjoy!

Yes, Lance Chilton's book is great - we have a copy but, unless it's been updated (?)I think some of his routes have been blocked/fenced since it was published. Still a good buy though and could be used in conjunction with the 'new' map to provide 'work-arounds'. I particularly like the contour markings on the Terrainmap - helpful (if they're accurate) if the marked path goes 'missing'

Have to admit that our proper walking days are over now (dodgy knees etc.) but still fun to read the map and dream about where we would go if we could!

I've had the Lance Chiltern book for a few years and I agree it's excellent, though I lost the map on a walk from Agia Marina to Chorio 2 trips ago. I'll be doing a few favourites from Lance's book when I'm back on Symi in 3 weeks. Think I'll miss the Agia Marina walk though, I came across a dead sheep on the track last time - I could smell it from some distance away :( I doubt it will still be there but I've found that walk hard work without dead sheep ;) .

We don't carry Lance's book at the moment as he has not updated it and we have to order quite a large quantity, paid for upfront. Once he has been to Symi again and brought the book and map up to date we will stock it again 8-)
