STOLEN AFFECTIONS

Findlay and I have found another island which is a serious contender for our affections. Had a wonderful holiday on Alonissos. What a beautiful little island. Although in many ways it is different from Symi there are also a lot of similiarities and I think that is why I liked it so much. It was just so quiet and peaceful. We hired a quadbike for most of our stay as needed transport to get to the beaches, and it was nice having the freedom to come and go as we pleased. That just opened up so much more of the island to us. Back nearly three weeks now so beginning to be a distant memory, but I just loved it so much. Still looking forward to being back on Symi next year, though 8-) , although must admit if we hadn't already booked Symi I might have been tempted to go back to Alonissos next year! Good to hear that Olympic will be taking on the Opera House. Although already booked for next year, if still available could be a contender for 2012. Then again might go back to Alonissos in 2012. Decisions, decisions!

Thank you for giving your view on Alonissos.....it's an island that from the write-ups, has always appealed to me. Back in the days of Laskarina, I'd had a notion to visit the island with them, in fact I'd thought I would probably visit quite a few.

As a single female traveller, Laskarina provided what felt like a safe and secure environment in which to explore new territory mainly because they were honest in their description of the islands and you were always given good information to enable you to hit the ground running in terms of local past times, traditions, amenities, excursions, transport, etc. etc.

I have been to both islands, Alonisoss (2001) before I found Symi (2002)!

The character of both islands is totally different. I found alonisoss to be better "connected" by ferries, but it depends much more on tourism for its income. Also my feeling was that the islanders (outside the main area of harbour) were less welcoming.

I found Symi to be much more enchanting and stole my heart in 2002 and when I returned for a second visit it was reinforced.

I have found each island I have visited has its own character, and everyone has their own needs and feelings.
