Symi web cam - probably not the first to ask this!

Postby John Gooding » 26 Apr 2011, 13:52

Hello Symi.

Any chance of getting the current web cam uprated to a streaming service?

And what about getting some other cams looking across the harbour area.

Be back one day......

Cheers,

JG

Symi web cam - probably not the first to ask this!

Postby Allan » 26 Apr 2011, 14:07

Hi John, welcome to the chat page.

We'd love to stream the webcam but the internet connection from Symi isn't really up to it. The camera has to share Symi Visitor Accommodation's connection and as you'll appreciate, their business use of the internet has to take precedence.

Maybe one day we'll have additional cameras but again it's a matter of resources.

Hope you get back to Symi eventually 8-)

Hello Allan,

Yes I guessed that might be the problem. Shame though.

Cheers for now,

Talking of the webcam, am I the only saddo who stares at it, trying to 'will' myself to pop out of the other end  . It's never worked so far but perhaps one day - or maybe the men in white coats will come to take me away first :?: . Don't think I'll try too hard today though, it looks a bit wet - though I could always take my brolly ;)

Symi web cam - probably not the first to ask this!

Back in the dark ages, about 8 years ago, we could only upload one or two still frames a day on the webcam as we were on dial up. That was when we were still above the gyros bar by the bridge. We had an old pair of dark glasses we used to put over the lense to cut the glare when it was in operation!

So I think we've come quite a long way - and may yet get onto live streaming, if they ever connect that fibre-optic cable to something! ;)

Symi shouldn't feel bad about its internet speeds - come to Llanddeiniol where we could start downloading a movie before we depart for Symi and it would still be downloading when we return   Symi's mobile phone signal is far superior to most of what we get as we drive through rural Wales    There is a massive difference between town and country in the UK :o

Is it just my computer or is the webcam playing up again :?: I've checked a few times in the last few days and all I'm getting is a White Square with The Symi Visitor written in the middle. I'm missing my Symi fix

Sorry Gemma but it's probably your computer.

This does happen from time to time and is usually fixed by either forcing a refresh by holding down the Shift key while clicking the refresh button on most browsers or if that fails, clearing the browser cache.

If you have trouble with all this geeky stuff send me a private message or email and I'll give you more information.

I hope we can fix it for you, I know how important the Symi Fix is! :D

Hmm, I have kept refreshing the page but didn't know about holding down the shift key though unfortunately it didn't make a difference  . I'm afraid I don't know how to clear the browser cache :geek: but I will google it ;)

I hope that cures the problem Gemma.

This link explains about how to clear the cache in most browsers:
