Hmm. Anyone who has seen the two bunkering trucks on Symi can relate to this one! Just as well yacht diesel isn't as combustible as petrol!

I've said this before on here, but I'll never forget the little petrol station that used to be up the street from the taxi rank in Mandraki. The sight of the attendant calmly filling up a car with a cigarette hanging from his mouth caused me to leave the area immediately. :o

Saw a motor yacht blow up in Jaffa once when the skipper turned the ignition without remembering to run the blower first to get rid of the petrol fumes. :o

Luckily there were enough yachtsmen around with fire extinguishers so the fire didn't spread but the motor yacht burned down to the water line. A sobering event.

Just been on to the Symidream website and read something there about the fireworks display that followed the festival taking place near the petrol station :o :o :o !

Can't help feeling Symi may be best avoided at this time of year and that there's a distinct possibility at some point it may not be there to visit at all :( !

I was there one year at Easter. We followed the "Judas" down from Chorio and alomg the quayside to the clock tower. The effigy was stuffed with fireworks and then George the Postman wandered up with a bottle of petrol, doused it liberally and casually stuffed a bit of burning paper up it's jumper!. it was a magnificent blaze, fireworks exploding everywhere and in every direction..... and the crowd only about 10 ft away :o Having said that, no-one was hurt. If it had been in the Health and Safety prone UK, we'd have had to view it through binoculars!

When I visited last year Kon I witnessed the remnants of dynamite blasting alongside the road out of Symi where the roadside barrier had been blasted away :o during some over exuberate celebrations!

I know I shouldn't laugh, but I do find it all rather quaint and as such is the quirkiness of the Greeks that I love  .
