I was there one year at Easter. We followed the "Judas" down from Chorio and alomg the quayside to the clock tower. The effigy was stuffed with fireworks and then George the Postman wandered up with a bottle of petrol, doused it liberally and casually stuffed a bit of burning paper up it's jumper!. it was a magnificent blaze, fireworks exploding everywhere and in every direction..... and the crowd only about 10 ft away
Having said that, no-one was hurt. If it had been in the Health and Safety prone UK, we'd have had to view it through binoculars!
